Arts, Culture and Scholastic Sports

Our young men know that a well-rounded education involves a real appreciation of the Arts and they are given unique opportunities to enrich themselves.

Our Music Department offers individual tuition in a wide range of brass, string, percussion and woodwind instruments as well as in piano and voice. Our choir and our musicians perform regularly on a variety of stages.

Boys who are interested in theatre are given numerous opportunities to perform in our school productions as well as in the inter-house festivals. Our school productions include the staging of the annual junior play for Grade 8 and 9 boys, the senior play for boys in Grades 10, 11 and 12 and a production for our more adventurous thespians.

Clubs and Societies
Clifton boys are able to choose from a variety of clubs and societies that take place as part of the formal school curriculum and in the co-curricular programme. In this way, they are able to experience new challenges and extend their interests in activities that lie well beyond the bounds of the classroom.

Community Partnerships
We ensure that Clifton boys are involved in their wider community and that they appreciate the opportunities which are given to them to serve others. Our partnership with the Isibonelo HIgh School is the principal focus of our community service, as it links the two schools in exciting educational, social, cultural and environmental projects throughout the year. In addition to social, sporting and cultural activities that are enjoyed by pupils from both schools, Clifton runs a Science Saturday School for students from Isibonelo in our laboratories.

Our Interact Society are active within our local community and provide service and support to a variety of local charities.  They also assist with a weekly soup kitchen programme run by one of the churches in the area.

The future belongs to young people with an education and the imagination to create.

From platforms and podia and from stages and screens, the arts are thriving at Clifton College.

At Clifton College, we recognize the importance of encouraging participation and appreciation for the performing and fine arts. To this end, a wide variety of opportunities exist for each boy to find a niche for self-expression and a chance to explore his creativity.

Led by dedicated members of staff, who are able to bring their expertise and instill their passion into the activities, each boy’s potential is developed to its full. This also allows for the best to excel; and, indeed, we have seen our College Choir achieve international accolades, our public speakers represent South Africa and a photographer awarded a global prize.

We know from long experience that no one can claim to be truly educated who lacks basic knowledge and skills in the arts.

The arts have been an inseparable part of the human journey; indeed, we depend on the arts to carry us toward the fullness of our humanity. We value them for themselves, and because we do, we believe knowing and practicing them is fundamental to the healthy development of our children's minds and spirits. That is why, in any country, the arts are inseparable from the very meaning of the term 'education.'
